Self Portrait
Video Clip
2003
This was a free approach assignment for the Music Appreciation course. The aim was to create images (Still or moving) using musical references. I was working on self portraits a lot, so I took this assignment seriously. I challenged myself to do a video, compose the music and use only still images.
Thanks to the help of my brother I was able to record through the keyboards not only some strings, but percussion and some other sound effects. Again, I was going to use sound as the rhythm reference for the visual sequence.
So when composing the music, due to the topic, it came out as an exercise of self expression, which brought an emotional and dramatic print to the sound atmosphere. This self portrait series was mainly thought for big format paper. The drawings were all done in graphite by me and I never used a mirror to draw me, I was not interested in my image, but in the images inside of me. I also wanted to show the people what other classic painters tried to when doing their own self portraits: to show your own soul in presence of a frame and paint it as you see it.
So when doing the video, the challenge was to be understood that anyone else could be the person on the image. I used only manipulated still images of me, keeping my identity secret, specially my gender. It was an exploration of new effects and stimuli, looking for people to be reflected by the video. When I showed it at class, at the end, I was applauded. That was an achievement for me. Its pragmatic worked out.
